    Comments, Additional Information, References

As Mendon Town Historian, I have been to the site at 341 Mendon Center Rd. where the old cobblestone barn was located and took some photos at the time I was there. It (the barn) was, indeed, on the Carl Powell property, just to the north and west of the house. There was 106 acres on the property.

I have a 1960 Tax Assessment 8 1/2" x 11" salmon colored card that lists a stone smokehouse, no size, and no value as well as a shop constructed of stone, 16 by 30, 480 sq. feet, valued at $100. There is also a drawing of the property, to scale, around the house and outbuildings. The latter outbuilding (cobblestone shop) mentioned was pretty well crumbled when I was there. I have five color photos of the shop the way it looked then. I also have two b & w photos that were taken in 1978. The view [in the photograph] from the front is pretty good, but the one from the side shows a huge amount of decay and the way it looked then. That was about 1980. NoteNOTE
Google Maps street level view July 2019 suggests that the barn structure has collapsed with only part of the walls still standing. No confirmation is known that the stone smokehouse was cobblestone or still; exists.
